Teaching Philosophy
Throughout my life I have worked with teachers who inspired me to work toward my highest potential and to learn everything I can about my art. As a voice teacher, I intend to honor my own teachers by providing my students with a safe place to connect with their voices, instilling discipline within them, and cultivating a love for artistry and communication. Every singer is different. My job is to understand each student that comes through my studio, and to tailor my lessons to suit their learning styles, vocabulary, and goals. Some students respond better to physical direction, and others to abstract imagery, for example. Not all my students will be seeking a musical career, and though they will be held to the same vocal standards as the ones who do, their lessons will be tailored to their goals. I wish to challenge my students to be well-rounded musicians. In addition to a solid vocal technique, I encourage the building of effective practice habits and the study of text, theory, history, and appropriate performance practices. This discipline provides the foundation for artistry. Artistry is cultivated by teaching students how to relate music to their own lives, leading them to meaningful portrayals of the text, and giving them opportunities to practice honesty through performance. Setting high standards for myself, as well as for my students, is paramount. To set a good example for my students, I continue my own vocal study, challenging myself to learn new music and maintain an active performance schedule. By gaining mastery in singing and performing often, my teaching improves. I lead by example, and draw from my own experiences in order to better prepare my students for the demands of performance.
